| Alright, so I realized as I started my newest Diplomacy thread that there is currently a huge linguistics barrier on the forum. Due to the fact that we are many different nations and cultures, it has become dreadfully clear that we would have such different languages that it would take years for us to learn each others languages to even properly have our peace talks. Now, I have a proposal to fix this nemesis of reality. Actual, preset languages! Now, I know what you're thinking. "F**K THAT! My nation has it's own specific language, it's a huge part of the RP!" This is true, and I'm not saying we get rid of that. What I -AM- saying is that we have specific languages to work with.
Low Common/Standard Common/High Common Common is the basic language of the World. Originally created by early Human Cultures, it has quickly spread to the other races of the world, even to the Eldest of the Races who have accepted the use of it grudgingly. Common is to be split into three -MAIN- versions, Low Common, Standard Common, and High Common. It shall go as follows.
Low Common Low Common is spoken by the Goblinoid and Orcish races of the world, along with Cultures that have not had contact with Humanity enough to have mastered the main language. It is rough, guttural, and frankly, not quite a language to be dreadfully honest. However, it allows for basic points to come across. Orcs and Goblins would be most likely the only races to know this. Lizardmen and Avians would also be possible.
Standard Common Standard Common is the language spoken by most Human Civilizations. Many Dialects of Standard Common have come out of the Human Nations, including those used by Meidi, Mille Sessau, and the Merenaz Caliphate. Most other races can easily master these due to their simplicity, however the languages are advanced enough to convey every emotion and thought a human being can go through. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, and Drow would know this. Lizardmen and Avians would once again have this as a possibility.
High Common High Common is a rare form of Common used by the Nobility of Man Kind and the Elder Races of the World. The language is possibly the longest surviving version of common, with only a few dialects. It is also considered the best way to convey true emotions and thoughts through words, a reason for it's extensive use by Elves. Only High Human Cultures, Elves, Halflings, and Dwarves would know this language generally.
Elvish Elvish is the standard language spoken by all elves, with many dialects branching off from it. Even though they may have slight differences, almost all dialects of Elvish can be spoken in conjunction with each other. The language itself is a flowing, pure language, one of the few in the world. Only Elves and Cultures with Historical Connections to Elves would know this language. Avians and Lizardmen might be aged enough to know this language.
Dwarvish Dwarvish is the rough language spoken by the Dwarves. Few dialects exist in Dwarvish, as the static Dwarven culture tends to keep the language from changing drastically between cultures. The language itself is brutal, with few vowels making the language sound like throaty growls to those who don't know the language. For it's facade of simplicity, the language is actually quite deep, just like the rock that it's speakers mine. Only Dwarven Cultures and Cultures with Historical Connections with Dwarves would know this. As always, Avians and Lizardmen might be aged enough to know this language.
Halfling Speak The cheery language of the Halflings is renowned around the world for being one of the most emotional conveying languages in the world. Filled with endless literary contradictions, the language is also one of the most confusing. For those who don't learn it as a first language, it is almost impossible to learn. Only Halflings and Cultures with Historical Connections to Halflings would know this language.
-- Now that that's cleared up, let it be aware that there are many dialects for each of these languages. These do not represent the only languages of the world, only the simple classifications so that we can more easily have contact with each other.

| Examples of each what? Each Dialect? By the way, Orcs and Goblins do not have their own language. Their languages would be considered Dialects of Low Common. | |

| My halflings are not "cheery," they are fatalistic and sometimes bawdy. I posit that Shidaran is a horribly corrupted version of traditional halfling language due to long-term isolation from its linguistic cousins and a separately developed culture. | |

| Well there you go. As I said, these are not designed to fit every nation. That's just unreasonable. I went off the Race's traits in general. Anyways, there's plenty of Dialects. The point is, your language is Halfling Speak and other Halflings would be able to speak it, roughly. | |
